Tonight and Sunday

Today at 3:00 Praise Community Fellowship will be setting up for the Halloween Parade tonight at Barb Joiners Law office located on 116 West Street Edwardsville. If you are planning on helping today or this evening in the handing out of hotdogs and drinks and meeting people I would recommend you dress very warm and bring a lawn chair.

This coming Sunday is Communion and we will be accepting donations to the Glen-Ed pantry.

Last Sunday we heard Jim Cymbala's sermon, "My House Shall be Called a House of Prayer!"
It was a powerful testimony to calling on God in prayer and believing in the power of the Holy Spirit.
God is real! Jesus is Alive! The Holy Spirit is available to all Christians! There are tremendous needs all over this world. Huge horrific situations and problems exist all around us.

1 Corinthians 4:2020 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

Ephesians 3:2020 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

Zephaniah 3:17

17 The Lord your God is with you,
    the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
    in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
    but will rejoice over you with singing.”

As Christians, are we plugging into the power available to us, or are we living life complacently as the spiritual war rages all around us? What is stifling our power to overcome these problems?

Announcements

Our church will have a booth set up this Friday the 31st at the Halloween parade. We will be handing out hotdogs, chips and drinks. For those who are interested in helping it looks like it is going to be windy and very cold! Brad and Barb Joiner have parking behind Barbs office for only half a dozen cars. We will be setting up at three o clock Friday afternoon. Don't feel obligated to help, we will probably have plenty, however everyone is welcome to come, its just that you may have to find parking somewhere else and walk to her office. The only thing I can mention to bring is very warm clothing!

This Sunday is Communion Sunday, therefore we will be collecting items for the Glen-Ed Pantry. Canned goods, paper products, soap, personal items, food, all are needed.   Thank you in advance for your help with this outreach project.

Time changes this Sunday! Move your clocks back one hour. We loose an hour so it is going to get dark around 5:15!

Watch for announcement and time for next Tuesday, November 4th, when we launch our weekly Prayer gathering. If you are interested in attending this gathering please email me at; kent@praisecommunityfellowship.com so I know how big of a space we are going to need.

The BIG relational "Why Not?"

People do not like to feel uncomfortable. The uncomfortable I'm talking about is a "special kind" of uncomfortable. It's the type of uncomfortable that puts a certain "fear" in people similar to public speaking. But let me make you a guarantee, "If you can overcome this "uncomfortable fear" I promise you your life is going to change in unimaginably wonderful ways. I'm talking about praying with your spouse or your significant other!

Do you have a strained relationship? Pray together!
Do you have strife between you that is preventing you both from enjoying each other? Pray together!
Has your spouse been under immense stress and seems distant? Pray together!
Have you drifted apart emotionally, physically? Pray together!
Are you going thru a very stressful time in your life? Pray together!
Are you enjoying a wonderful relationship and want to keep it that way? Pray together!
Have you been dating someone and want to know where the relationship should go? Pray together!

Matthew 18:2020 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

John 16:2424 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

Jeremiah 33:3‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’

So here are Gods promises. What is it that would keep you from igniting a Holy Spirit Flame into your relationship? The only thing I can think of is fear! But fear of what? Lets analyze this.
It would be too embarrassing? What is embarrassing about praying with the one you love? 
What you have to do is figure out what is making you so uncomfortable to pray with your spouse or significant other. The uncomfortable fear probably has something to do with the fact that this would be "out of character" for some. Well get over it! 
Here is the only question you must answer, Do yo want Gods power to intervene in your relationship or not? If the answer is yes, then pray with your spouse or significant other! 
Kent I do pray for my spouse I just don't do it with them? Why not? 
Your relationship cannot stay the same when you begin a regular prayer time with your spouse!
God has so much for each of us and it is released with uninhibited, fearless prayer! Amen!

Where are all the people?

This question is being asked many pastors today, "Where is everyone?" " Why are most people choosing not to go to church anymore?" This question was asked by Jesus too.


Luke 17:11-17

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”
14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.
15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”
The reasons people are no longer going to church may be many, but one reason is that people forget or possibly don't even know all that God has done for them as in the example above.  I don't think people understand what worship is anymore and that we are there to worship God, to thank Him, and to experience Him. Today however, I think the primary reason for lack of attendance is far more problematic and sad. I believe the primary reason people have stopped attending church is because the power of the Holy Spirit is lacking, no worse than that, non existent, in most church services today. Without the power of the Holy Spirit, people are essentially attending man made services! It takes the power of the Holy Spirit to convict the church goers heart, to change the church goers heart, to do spiritual surgery on the church goers heart. People are too busy, too stressed out and too tired to continue to add another obligation to their already overbooked schedule unless….what they add is truly life changing!

You and I have heard the many reasons people don't come to church and when you stop and think about the reasons the bottom line is always this, "People choose not to come because they "know" nothing significant is going to happen so why bother?" Now that is a sad commentary on the condition of the Christian church today, really sad! I'm convinced that there are some people, many people who no longer even expect to meet God when they come to church! How has this happened? 

Well Kent you are the pastor, who's fault is it that we are not experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit? Let me be right up front, "It's my fault!"  It is the pastors duty to create the environment in the church service that will allow the Holy Spirit to do His work. Everything we do at Praise Community Fellowship must be to bring glory to God and it is the pastors responsibility to make sure everything in the service is pointing to God and His Glory.
Look at this bible verse.


Colossians 1:15-18

The Supremacy of the Son of God

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.
Jesus is to be the focus and the reason for everything we do. He is the head of the church! He must be lifted up in every song, in every activity because church is about Him! We gather to worship Him and all He did for us so that  "in everything he might have the supremacy."

The only viable reason for coming to church and getting involved in a church is so that you can get to know and experience the living God, Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit. That is the bottom line. It's not so you can play in a band or get to sing in a group, or get to know some nice people. Nor should one attend church because that's where their friends go, or because they like the music, or the pastor. All those things can be part of worship but none of them are the reason one should attend church.  The primary reason one attends a church must be to meet and experience the living God. That is when lives change, miracles happen, and  true worship will be experienced! People are choosing not to come to church because there is no longer even an expectation of meeting God if they come, and that is truly sad! 

My number one priority is for Praise Community Fellowship to become a place where people can come to experience the living God. A gathering where true worship takes place. A place where people come broken and leave changed, healed, filled with hope because they experienced Gods Holy Power! Let the healing begin.

When NOTHING means EVERYTHING!

Romans 8:31-3

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

If you can grasp this verse with your heart and soul you will begin to understand what Christian Freedom is. You have been released and set free from everything that hinders your life. EVERYTHING, because "nothing" is going to keep you from Gods love for those who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior! 
Do you feel as if you are not worthy of Gods love because of your past life, the things you have said or done? Then read the Romans 8:31-39 several more times until it sinks in!

This Sunday is Surprise Sunday! Things will be done a little different! We will have a guest Speaker and you won't want to  miss Him! Are you lacking Gods power and presence in your daily life? Come this Sunday and be changed!

More than ANYTHING!

This morning as I prayed for guidance, direction and wisdom God made something very clear to me. The Holy Spirits power will come when I desire the Spirit more than anything else in my life. I must be willing to let go of all things that would keep the Spirit from filling me. Join me today if you dare to allow the Holy Spirit of God to change you in a powerful way. And know that this will only happen if you are willing to let go of everything that hinders the spirit!

If you pray this prayer, you will know what things you must let go of. "Dear Heavenly Father, Creator of all things, fill me with the power of your Holy Spirit so that I may be used in a powerful way for your kingdom. Show me what things in my life are hindering the Holy Spirit's presence and give me the strength and the fortitude to put all such things aside that I may be empowered and useful to your plan. In Jesus name. Amen!

Mondays thoughts…..You have the KEY!

Imagine you are stranded on a desert Island. There has been a shipwreck and you have survived the ordeal. You and three others have made it to the shore of a small deserted island along with a large metal container. The container contains everything you will need to survive. Water, food rations, medical supplies, shelter, fire starters and two way radios with batteries, life rafts, flashlights and other survival items. The problem is, the container is chained and padlocked.  Opening that container means life and rescue, not opening the container means death. Before the voyage you were each instructed that in the event of an unlikely emergency there is a special key in each of your staterooms. Before bailing from the vessel make sure to take the key!  The Key can be used to open the emergency supply containers.

You and the other three survivors are exhausted. You begin assessing the island and your situation. All three of you come to the conclusion that a top priority is to access water. There is no fresh water on the island. Arguing begins on what should be done to find water. There is panic and anger and fear. Night comes and it gets cold. There is a possibility of hyperthermia so all three of you huddle next to the large metal survival container for shelter from the wind. Another day passes and thirst becomes a major issue.  Where will we find water? What are we going to do? And yes the survival keys are in each of the survivors pockets. Life is available but instead they continue to argue, worry, and perish!

Ridiculous you might say! I agree. Ridiculous! Just like most of us who call ourselves Christians and do not use the Key that God has given to each of us….PRAYER. Prayer unlocks the survival container of Gods wisdom, Gods guidance, Gods power over all things.

John 15:7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

Philippians 4:6do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Luke 11:9And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Jeremiah 33:3Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

You too have the key of life but if you are like me, we choose way too often not to use it! Why? 
Use the key on every circumstance in your life and use the key on others who are stranded and seeking survival. Use the key and live!

Saturday Night Live used to have a skit where the answer to improving the music was, "More Cowbell!"

For the Christian, for every problem you will ever face in life, the best answer is "More Jesus!"

Tomorrow evening 6:30 Crystal Garden. We will come together to worship, pray together, call on the Holy Spirit together, and get closer to Jesus! Jesus has the answers and the strength to get you through anything you are facing!

Misplaced

Have you ever lost your cell phone or keys? Let me ask you something, when that happens, what becomes the top priority in your life? Nothing else matters until what is lost is found, right?

Are you seeking God? Seeking Him in every circumstance in your life? Your health, your relationships, your dreams, plans, and goals, your finances, your business?  God is a God of EVERYTHING!

We tend to seek Him more from a menu than in all areas of our lives. Well let's see, I'm not feeling well so I will seek Him about my health and I really need help with my relationship with…?
My money? No I'm good there I really don't need Him in that area.
How about my leisure time, my entertainment choices? Do I seek God in those area's of my life or are these areas "off limits" to Him? We tend to pick and choose where we need or want God's input.

Jesus is to be Lord of our lives. 

LORD
  1. someone or something having power, authority, or influence; a master or ruler:
The rewards of Peace, Hope, and Confidence come to the person who makes Jesus Lord over all areas of their life.
Bring Him into all circumstances and seek Him as if you were seeking your lost keys or phone. You won't find His fullness in just an hour a week at church. It will take personal effort and reading of Gods word. You must allow Him into every area of your life. That will only happen if you develop a trusting relationship with Him.


Is making God Lord over every area of your life possible?  Yes

Is it easy?  No!

As a pastor do I fail?   Yes

How do I handle my failures?    I repent and continue to seek Him for guidance. I know when I am drifting from His presence and it usually happens when I have not spent enough time in prayer and reading the bible. I have to recharge daily! For me it takes at least an hour and many times it takes several hours. But just like my cell phone, if I don't fully recharge, I am limited as to how long I can stay God focused.

So if I don't spend at least an hour a day in bible reading and prayer I'm screwed?  No! If you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior you are Saved and Loved and Accepted!  Never forget that. But without time invested "with" God you are giving up the Peace, Hope and Confidence that is available to you!

One's Christianity may begin with words. "God loved all of us crazy, messed up people so much that He sent his own son to die for us so that if we accept that sacrifice and believe in Jesus, that we too will have eternal life!"

But to experience the fullness of Christianity, the words must become action. Love is not a feeling but an action. How will they know we love them if we don't make love an experience rather than a concept? God showed us how much He loved us through His son Jesus.

This Sunday, we will look at putting love into action.  Sermon  "Blown Away, ...Let's get Radical!"

What Does God Want Us (PCF) To Do?

That is my question of the day. What does God want PCF to do? 
When I was asked to be the pastor of this wonderful group of people now known as Praise Community Fellowship, I saw group of excited, motivated, eager, maybe even overly eager people wanting to make something wonderful happen. I'm not sure anyone at the time could define what exactly that something wonderful was, but whatever it was, it was going to happen and be big and amazing!

So here we are 31/2 years later and I want to take the time to review and address where we have been and what lies ahead. Many of you now realize that creating a church from the ground up is hard work. It can be demanding, and there are many challenges. No different, I might add, from what the disciples faced as they launched out trying to bring the Gospel to the world. The disciples were bringing a brand new message to a world that had never heard of Jesus and His teachings. We on the other hand have a different challenge. We are trying to introduce people to the reality of the living Jesus (aka Christianity) to people who think they already know what "Christianity" is, and many of them want no part of it! And some for good reasons!

Praise Community Fellowship has come a long way! We overcome many obstacles and we will continue to face new obstacles as we move forward. The key is allowing God to be the leader of the church. As I have said many times before, "we are conducting a grand experiment in love!" The people of this church are stepping up and doing what needs to be done. We continue to volunteer and push forward even when sometimes the pushing gets a little steep.

What does God want us to do?  To me it can be summed up fairly simply, "Keep loving and trusting God! Keep loving and trusting one another!, Keep praying for guidance and patience!

God knows exactly where we are, and He knows exactly where we need to go. We are on Gods path because that is the only path that leads to victory. All other paths are dead ends. My sermon last Sunday is very important for all of us. When you reach a point of being worn out, worn down, getting frustrated and impatient it is a sure sign that you need to "Withdraw" for a time of prayer and recharging. If your service to God is making you more edgy, worn down, angry, resentful, etc. I've got news for you, you are no longer serving God. That is why I posted my last blog. Short, sweet, and to the point! "In christian service Motive is everything!"

Right Where You Are

Never make the mistake in thinking that God cannot use you right where you are in your life.
God requires only one thing for a person to be used powerfully, and that is surrender to His will.

Your sinner?….. Who isn't?
Your in a messed up circumstance?….Join the club!
Your in a profession that demands huge amounts of time and energy?……Perfect!
You are unemployed?….Even Better, you have complete flexibility!
Are you ill?….Read The Blind Man
You are confused?…..Again, join the club!
You are worn out?….Come this Sunday and listen to the sermon!

Circumstances never prevent God from working through people, people prevent God from working through them.

God can accomplish more through a person who works as a janitor who is completely surrendered to His will than through a pastor of a mega church who is there for his own glory and a prestigious job!

Too Much!

The bible is a huge book and therefore overwhelms many would be readers. So is Gone with the Wind, Moby Dick, and War and Peace…..

Here is the thing about the bible. It contains infinite Spiritual wisdom and because of that it can seem overwhelming. However, God also knows you and your capabilities, your habits and your patience level. The object of reading the bible is NOT to read it straight thru and try and grasp everything that you are reading. The bible is not designed like any other book because it was written for you personally. God will speak to you on your level of understanding when you commit to getting to know Him by starting a daily bible reading discipline.

Disciplining yourself to daily bible reading shows God you are committed to getting to know Him. He will honor that. So after you read everyday for a week and you have absolutely no clue what it is you've read, it's ok because God knows that! Just listen to your inner voice and watch your life circumstances as you continue the discipline.

If you go to the gym and begin lifting weights, more than likely you will see no results after the first week. But, if you continue with the discipline, you will progressively change your strength and body shape. Reading the bible is the same in many ways. If you go to the gym and lift too much at one time, you are going to get so sore you will probably not go back to the gym. However if you select a proven systematic routine based on your fitness level, you can progressively increase your strength and stamina. Start by reading a couple of paragraphs. Don't worry if you don't understand or feel different, just stick with the program! Your spiritual life will develop as sure as your biceps will strengthen with weight training.

Chuck Weiss is at Meridian Village for rehab.

I will be offering a 5 week confirmation class for any of our youth who would like to participate. Let me know if you have interest. I am hoping to have at least 4 to start the class. This will be our first confirmation class. I will determine the times after I hear back from who is interested.

Wednesdays a group of guys meet at Edwardsville breadco at 8:00 AM all are invited to join us at this informal meeting.

We will be having a meeting soon, (time and date to be determined), about our booth at Barb Joiners office for this years Halloween parade. We will need volunteers to be ambassadors for Praise Community Fellowship. We will decide what we will be handing out, cooking, and music!

Thought for the Day

Who are you giving your allegiance to?

Allegiance defined: loyalty or commitment of a subordinate to a superior or of an individual to a group or cause.

Why read the bible? To Hear from God about your life. There is also a very interesting verse in Colossians.

Colossians 2:1-3New International Version (NIV)

I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
"All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge!" Get to know Jesus for in Him, there is infinite wisdom. I want to remind you of a blog I posted earlier this summer. When you reach a point in life where you are up against a wall, you feel down, defeated, lost, what do you typically do? Worry, fret, call all your friends and rehash the problem over and over? There is a better option. Go to God, read the bible, pray. Not just for 5 minutes but until God's Peace and Joy comes. 
How long will that take? Does it matter? Go to God, read the bible, Pray!  Go to God, read the bible, Pray! Go to God, read the bible, Pray!   Then repeat………….

Monday Morning Power Points

Question:  What is it that is keeping so many of us from living a God empowered life?

Answer: I can only answer that from my life experience and what I have observed as I continue to seek  God and walk with Him on a daily basis. I think the primary obstacle for most of us is that our lives are primarily focused on our agendas rather than on God's agenda. It takes quite a paradigm shift to make Gods agenda more important than yours. But that shift can be made. 

Question: So what would I have to do to begin this "agenda" shift, switching my agenda to Gods agenda?

Answer:  I think there are many ways this could take place but here are some of what I think are foundational requirements. If you can get these fundamentals down you will see a radical shift in your relationship with God.  So here are what I would call the foundational requirements.

A.) Accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior by confessing your sins and then crying out to Him that you need Him and accept Him and need help in believing in Him.

B.) Get an easy to read version of the bible like the  New International Version or the New Living Translation,  there are several good choices, and begin a daily devotion reading program from your bible. God will speak to you through His word which is written in the bible. It still amazes me of how few Christians actually read their bible. Let me give an illustration of just how important this part of your Christian walk really is. Imagine someone wanting to become a member of a professional sports team. I'll use football as my example. The person shows up for practice and at the end of the very first practice the coach hands out a "Play Book" This book contains this particular teams methods and strategy for playing the game. If you are going to become a active member of this team you are going to have to know the play book. Coming to practice without knowing the plays is going to leave you on the bench.

 I still say journaling is an excellent way to "hear"  Gods voice. Read and then write. What is the playbook saying to you? The Holy Spirit will interpret Gods word to you for your particular circumstance. God will speak to you about your life from His word. But you have to make a daily commitment to reading it. 

Question: Do I have to read the bible daily?

Answer: Only if  you want to enjoy all that God has for you!

C.) And the other fundamental requirement would be prayer. Go to God daily with anything you would like guidance on but also with this, "God show me how to become part of your plan. Give me the  wisdom, the strength, the patience, and the energy to become a major player in your agenda!"

It's Thursday and God is Still in Control!

I saw Chuck Weiss yesterday and he definitely took a bad fall. The good news is, he may be coming home today but will have to be very careful. He is wearing a neck collar because he broke a bone in his neck. Please continue to pray for his recovery.

The meeting last night with the Well. There have been no decisions made at this point because we will need to have an attorney look over a document that may be binding on the Well.  Please continue to pray for Gods wisdom for our future and for the future of the Well.  The board continues to explore all options for our future. Don't worry about a thing, God is in control!

This Sunday, we will be gathering food for the Glen Ed Pantry. Canned goods, laundry detergents, soap, and paper products are all needed. We are going to make every communion Sunday a day we collect for the Glen-Ed pantry.

Youth Group The startup of our youth group will meet the first time Wednesday October 8th 6:30 pm  at Sheryl Burian's house  - 108 Michelle Drive, Glen Carbon, Ill.  Call or text Sheryl Burian if you need directions, or if you cannot attend at 618-806-4623

Choir starts tonight! We will be rehearsing on Thursday evenings at 7pm - at The Crystal Garden (current home for PCF Church services), starting this week, Oct 2nd.
For those of you that cannot commit to every week rehearsal - please feel free to come when you can.  Also, if you want to sing with us on Sunday's, but can't make the rehearsal, that's great too.  All are welcome - just as you are - and just when you can.  :)
